The lead investigator in Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s Cold Case Posse investigation of President Obama’s birth certificate says the case has taken a startling turn, and sheriff’s investigators now are assisting the Cold Case volunteers.
“When this information is finally exposed to the public, it will be universe-shattering,” Mike Zullo told WND. “This is beyond the pale of anything you can imagine.”
But the allegations, he said, which go far beyond a fraudulent birth certificate, could be public as early as March.
The issue arose once again because of the death Wednesday in Hawaii of state Health Department chief Loretta Fuddy in a plane crash. She was the official who waived state prohibitions and provided to the White House a copy of a document that Obama presented to the public as his birth certificate.
It’s the document that Arpaio’s investigators have concluded is fraudulent.
Amid conspiracy theories circulating the Internet, Zullo told WND Friday that Fuddy’s death – she was the only fatality among nine people aboard a small airplane that crashed off the coast of Molokai – appears to be a tragic accident, not foul play.
He said his investigation does not depend on any information from Fuddy.
In an interview today with author and talk-radio host Carl Gallups of PPSimmons News and Ministry Network and the author of “The Magic Man in the Sky,” and the new “The Rabbi who Found Messiah,” Zullo said his investigation of the Obama fraud case “does not hinge on Ms. Fuddy.”
“While her death certainly is a tragedy, it in no way hampers our investigation in this matter,” he said. “If people truly believe that her untimely demise was somehow related to an attempt to silence her for ‘what she may or may not know,’ then there are several more people in Hawaii who should be very, very concerned.
“Again, I want to emphasize,” Zullo said, “Sheriff Arpaio and I do not, at this time, believe her death was connected to any nefarious circumstances.”
The birth certificate dispute dates back to before the 2008 election. Critics, including Hillary Clinton, raised the issue about Obama’s status as a “natural-born citizen.” Not defined in the Constitution, it probably was thought at the time of the writing of the Constitution to be someone born of two citizen parents.
Obama fails that test because his father was a Kenyan student visiting the U.S.
Arpaio assigned his Cold Case Posse to look into the issue before the 2012 election, when constituents approached him and asked him to check whether Obama would be an ineligible candidate on the presidential election ballot.
In a recent radio interview with Gallups, Zullo affirmed the investigation had been expanded to the county sheriff’s office and was “moving in a direction that was not anticipated by us.”
“The whole [issue] is more nefarious than you can imagine,” Zullo said, crediting Arpaio for ordering the investigation and sticking with it.
“He knows in his gut that something is wrong,” Zullo said.
Dozens of lawsuits have been filed without success. One case is pending before the Alabama Supreme Court for which Zullo provided evidence.
See a report of Fuddy’s death:
Still a live issue
Zullo has testified that the White House computer image of Obama’s birth certificate contains anomalies that are unexplainable unless the document had been fabricated piecemeal by human intervention, rather than being copied from a genuine paper document.
“Mr. Obama has, in fact, not offered any verifiable authoritative document of any legal significance or possessing any evidentiary value as to the origins of his purported birth narrative or location of the birth event,” he explained. “One of our most serious concerns is that the White House document appears to have been fabricated piecemeal on a computer, constructed by drawing together digitized data from several unknown sources.”
Zullo also has noted that the governor of Hawaii was unable to produce an original birth document for Obama, and it should have been easy to find.
See some of Zullo’s evidence:
More recently, Grace Vuoto of the World Tribune reported that among the experts challenging the birth certificate is certified document analyst Reed Hayes, who has served as an expert for Perkins Coie, the law firm that has been defending Obama in eligibility cases.
“We have obtained an affidavit from a certified document analyzer, Reed Hayes, that states the document is a 100 percent forgery, no doubt about it,” Zullo told the World Tribune.
“Mr. Obama’s operatives cannot discredit [Hayes],” the investigator told the news outlet. “Mr. Hayes has been used as the firm’s reliable expert. The very firm the president is using to defend him on the birth certificate case has used Mr. Hayes in their cases.”
The Tribune reported Hayes agreed to take a look at the documentation and called almost immediately.
“There is something wrong with this,” Hayes said.
Hayes produced a 40-page report in which he says “based on my observations and findings, it is clear that the Certificate of Live Birth I examined is not a scan of an original paper birth certificate, but a digitally manufactured document created by utilizing material from various sources.”
“In over 20 years of examining documentation of various types, I have never seen a document that is so seriously questionable in so many respects. In my opinion, the birth certificate is entirely fabricated,” he says in the report.
Investigator Douglas J. Hagmann of the Northeast Intelligence Network reported this month that in October an affidavit was filed in a court case, under seal, that purportedly identifies the creator of the Obama birth certificate.
He said Douglas Vogt, an author and the owner and operator of a scanning business who also has an accounting background, invested over two years in an investigation of the authenticity of document.
Vogt, along with veteran typesetter Paul Ivey, conducted “exhaustive research of the document provided to the White House Press Corps on April 27, 2011 – not the online PDF, a critical distinction that must be understood,” Hagmann said.
“Using their combined experience of 80 years in this realm, they conducted extensive examinations of the ‘copy’ that was used as the basis for the PDF document. They acquired the same type of equipment that was used back in the late 1950s and early 1960s in an attempt to recreate the document presented as an ‘authenticated copy’ proving the legitimacy of Barack Obama. Instead, they found 20 points of forgery on that document and detail each point of forgery in the affidavit,” wrote Hagmann.
“Even more interesting, Mr. Vogt claims to have identified the ‘signature’ of the perpetrator, or the woman who created the forged document, hidden within the document itself. Her identity, in addition to the identity of other conspirators and their precise methods are contained in a sealed document supplementing the public affidavit.”
Grounds for impeachment
Last month, WND columnist Christopher Monckton wrote that the controversy he calls “Hawaiigate” should be “the central ground of impeachment.”
“First, the dishonesty is shameless and in your face. Mr Obama’s advisers, once they realized the ‘birth certificate’ was as bogus as a $3 bill, knew that if they simply went on pretending that $3 bills are legal tender the hard-left-dominated news media would carefully and continuously look the other way, pausing occasionally to sneer at anyone who pointed out that, in this constitutionally crucial respect, the ‘president’ has no clothes,” Monckton wrote.
“Secondly, not one of the numerous agencies of state, as well as federal government, whose duty was and is to investigate the Mickey-Mouse ‘birth certificate’ has bothered even to respond to the thousands of requests for investigation put forward by U.S. citizens.”
He said that in Hawaii last year, he watched “as a senior former state senator called the police and, when they came, handed over to them compelling evidence that the ‘birth certificate’ had been forged.”
“The police, correctly, passed the file to the state’s attorney general, a ‘Democrat,’ who did nothing about it,” he said.
“In Washington, D.C., I watched as a concerned citizen from Texas telephoned the FBI and reported the ‘birth certificate’ as being a forgery. They said they would send two agents to see him within the hour. No one came.”
‘You tell me about eligibility’
One of the highest profile skeptics has been billionaire Donald Trump.
Trump said he can’t be certain that Obama is eligible to be president, and he pointedly noted that a reporter who was poking fun at the issue admitted he can’t, either.
Trump repeatedly has insisted Obama has not documented his eligibility. At one point, he offered $5 million to the charity or charities of Obama’s choice if he would release his passport records and authorize the colleges he attended to release his applications and other records.
Trump argues that those documents would show whether or not Obama ever accepted scholarship or other aid as a foreign student, which could preclude him from being a “natural-born citizen.”
Trump’s conversation with ABC’s Jonathan Karl started with Karl noting that Trump took on the “not serious” issue of eligibility.
“Why does that make me not serious?” Trump demanded. “I think that resonated with a lot of people.”
Karl replied: “You don’t still question he was born in the United States, do you?”
“I have no idea,” Trump said. “I don’t know. Was there a birth certificate? You tell me. You know some people say that was not his birth certificate. I’m saying I don’t know. Nobody knows, and you don’t know either. Jonathan you’re a smart guy, and you don’t know.”
When Karl admitted he was “pretty sure,” Trump jumped on the statement.
“You just said you’re pretty sure … you have to be 100 percent sure,” he said. “Jonathan, you said you’re pretty convinced, so let’s just see what happens over time.”
Among the many records the Obama camp has refused to release are the marriage license of his father (Barack Sr.) and mother (Stanley Ann Dunham), name change records (Barry Soetero to Barack Hussein Obama), adoption records, records of his and his mother’s repatriation as U.S. citizens from Indonesia, baptism records, Noelani Elementary School (Hawaii) records, Punahou School financial aid or school records, Occidental College financial aid records, Harvard Law School records, Columbia senior thesis, Columbia College records, record with Illinois State Bar Association, files from his terms as an Illinois state senator, his law client list, medical records and passport records.
Monckton, citing Zullo’s sworn affidavit in a court case, published a sworn mathematical analysis demonstrating the near-zero probability that the White House “birth certificate” is genuine.

Indiana: Obama Removed From Ballot? Birthers Final Chance Today
|Orly Taitz meets with Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana|
Today, Dr. Orly Taitz, ESQ is in court to challenge the Secretary of State of Indiana‘s right to dismiss her previous ballot challenge against President Barack Obama’s place on the 2012 ballot.
She is reportedly bringing 7 witnesses, although her most relevant witnesses (Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Mike Zullo and “Senior Deportation Officer” John Sampson), have refused to appear, claiming that Orly Taitz is a “Circus Show”. Taitz subpoena’d them and even filed a Motion to Compel Sheriff Joe in Arizona court to appear at the Indiana hearing today.
You have to wonder what their actual motivations are if they can submit sworn affidavits to courts but refuse to back them up with actual in-person witness testimony. Could it be that they do not actually believe the affidavits they signed and thusly cannot risk perjuring themselves on the witness stand? Time will tell.
6:35pm EST: Pamela Barnett’s eyewitness account: Judge Reid has not made a ruling.
Orly did a great job when I saw her before I was sequestered out of the room. I didn’t get to see the other witnesses. but everyone said the IN attorney general attorney was acting for Obama watching the evidence being testified to… challenging everything.
He and the judge both seemed to be intentionally trying to drag out the time so Orly wouldn’t have enough time to get to all of the witness testimony.
The judge heard a motion to stop the trial even though she shouldn’t have because it was only filed the day before and Orly has 15 days to file a reply brief. This took over an hour of the court time which cut into the witness time. The tyrannical state attorney kept repeating his arguments over and over to waste time.
Paul Irey and Chitto Papa testified to the forged birth certificate and instead of being concerned about protecting the state of Indiana from vote fraud, he went on the attack for Obama.
Strunk got to testify to the fact Obama has the alias Soebarkah and that was it. Before witnesses could start testifying finally, Orly had kept reminding the Judge that she had paid thousands of dollars to bring all of the witnesses there to try to speed up the proceedings. But in the end the judge abruptly cut the trial off even though she was hearing testimony regarding an issue of national security and Bob Kern and I did not get to testify. She didn’t even let my documents be put on the record.
Orly remained positive. She was very happy with Irey’s and Papa’s testimony. She feels that any honest person that saw the testimony would “know obama’s “Hawaii birth certificate” posted at whitehouse.gov is a forgery.
Sorry that I was not able to testify. I had prepared many, many hours. The fight goes one.
5:40pm EST: Orly Taitz Press Release: Today a trial was conducted in Indianapolis Indiana on the issue of Daclaratory relief and injunctive relief due to Obama’s use of forged Birth Certificate, Selective Service Certificate and a fraudulently obtained Connecticut Social Security number 042-68-4425. Presiding Judge is a superior court Judge Sherry K. Reid. For the Plaintiffs appeared attorneys Orly Taitz and local Indiana counsel Greg Black. For the defense appeared Deputy Attorney General Kenneth Joel and Deputy attorney general Jefferson Garn. Over an extremely rigorous objection by the defense, Judge Reid admitted into evidence exhibits and testimony of witnesses Paul Irey and Felicito Papa. Mr. Papa testified that he graduated from the Indiana Institute of Technology had some 20 years of experience with Adobe Illustrator program. He testified that Obama”s birth certificate opened in Adobe illustrator in 9 layers, which means that this is a document, which underwent computer manipulation. Mr. Papa testified that it cannot be a genuine document, as in 1961 there was no Adobe Illustrator. Birth certificates in 1961 were created not on the computer, but with a typewriter. He stated his opinion that this is a forgery. His exhibits, showing layers within the document, were admitted into evidence.
Mr. Paul Irey testified that he has 57 years of experience working for NSA and later advertising, typesetting and computer graphics programs.
Mr. Irey testified that Obama’s alleged birth certificate is a computer generated forgery.
Mr. Irey had a large board with exhibits, where he showed enlargements of all the letters in Obama’s birth certificate. He vividly demonstrated that letters came from different typesetting, which in itself is a proof of forgery.
Additionally Mr. Irey testified that when a document is printed with a typewriter, the spaces between the letters are the same, however in Obama’s birth certificate the spacing varies, which is a sign of forgery.
Mr. Irey also testified that there is a white halo around letters in Obama’s birth certificate, which can exist oly as a result of computer manipulation. Mr. Irey testified that Obama’s birth certificate is a computer generated forgery.
Decision by the court is expected within a week.

Pat Boone and Sheriff Joe’s Arizona ‘Birther’ Party Scrapped Because No People Want to Buy A Ticket For Their Birther Bash
By Gregory J. Krieg | ABC OTUS News
The Greater Phoenix Tea Party Patriots group has pulled the plug on Pat Boone and Sheriff Joe Arpaio, cancelling their Sept. 22 “Birther” bash at the city’s Celebrity Theatre “due to inadequate ticket sales.”
The venue’s website touts an “intimate atmosphere of this 2,650-seat theater in the round” with an “extremely rare revolving stage.”
Prices of entry ranged from $10, for tickets purchased in advance, to $25 if you wanted a “Meet and Greet” with the Maricopa County sheriff, who is pushing for a “Congressional investigation into the fraudulent documents produced by the [Obama] administration.”
The group’s website has posted a blog entry confirming the decision to nix the show.
When contacted by ABC News, Tea Party Patriots co-founder Jenny Beth Martin said she had no idea that Arpaio, Boone, or Lt. Col. Terry Lakin, a doctor who spent five months in prison after he refused deployment to Afghanistan, were scheduled to headline the affiliate’s gathering.
“I didn’t know about it about until you told me 120 seconds ago,” Martin, who, along with Sarah Palin, was named to Time magazine’s 2010 “Most Influential” leaders list, told ABC News today. Tea Party Patriots Group leaders in Arizona did not respond to requests for comment.
It’s been an eventful summer for Arpaio, “America’s Toughest Sheriff.” On July 19, the same day he first appeared in court to face accusations he engaged in a systematic campaign of racial profiling, Arpaio convened a press conference in Phoenix, promising to unveil a big break in his “independent investigation” into the validity of the president’s birth certificate.
But supporters were to be disappointed. With no substantial revelations to report, he launched into a tirade against the White House.
“Show us the microfilm,” he said, dismissing the electronic birth certificate released last year by President Obama. “I said it a while back. Show us the microfilm and we’ll all go back home and forget this.
“We wanted to clear the President of the United States. That was my mission, but it hasn’t happened that way.”
Since then, the racial profiling suit has been dismissed and the feds have dropped a separate abuse-of-power investigation. But Arpaio still faces damaging charges that his office failed to pursue more than 400 sex crimes cases between 2004 and 2007.

On one level, the answer is easy given the absence of verifiable bona fides attesting to Obama’s life story, from every college record to every travel document, from every medical record to every legal writing to every law practice billing record to every record of his tenure as an Illinois state senator – and more. But the story has had to penetrate the American psyche in spite of a deep freeze on the topic in conventional channels. The Obama identity story, burning at the grass-roots-level for more than four years now, is consistently snuffed out and ignored by American journalists and the political class, from elected leaders to party officials. This silence is strictly non-partisan, and spans the political spectrum.
An investigation, undertaken by a so-called cold case posse working for Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County, Arizona, has now concluded that not one but two Obama basic identity documents are, without a doubt, forgeries: 1) the computer file (pdf) of the 1961 birth certificate that appears on the White House website; and 2) the president’s 1980 military draft registration card released by the U.S. Selective Service Administration shortly before the 2008 election. These investigators maintain they can prove this in court.
The story of how they might do so is verboten, too. But somehow the saga doesn’t end up in George Orwell’s “memory hole”. This is due mainly to the irrepressible nature of the Internet.
It is here, for example, and not in the mainstream media, where, following the White House online release of Obama’s 1961 ”long-form” birth certificate on April 27, 2011, a small army of private individuals with varying degrees of technology expertise downloaded the document file and delved into the unexpectedly “unflattened” graphic composition “layers”. They submitted a series of computer forensics analyses to this online public square, arguing that the White House pdf had been fraudulently manipulated. Since that time, similar evidence has been methodically amassed and repeatedly tested under the auspices of Sheriff Arpaio’s cold case team.
Sheriff Arpaio formed this cold case posse after 250 local citizens asked him to determine whether Obama was eligible to appear on the Arizona presidential ballot in 2012.
On two occasions in 2012, the posse presented findings to the public. They concluded that the birth certificate on the White House website didn’t originate on a piece of paper but rather was created, or, more precisely, forged as an electronic file on a computer. As one Adobe expert and posse consultant put it: “The only time Obama’s long-form birth certificate image exists as a paper document is when a computer user selects Print from the File menu.”
At this point, the posse would like to turn over all of its evidence to Congress for a formal investigation. Like a hand grenade that could go off at any moment, however, such an investigation has no takers. And so the fuse burns on not one, but two potential constitutional crises.
One involves the biggest unsolved mystery in American history: If Arpaio’s findings are correct, who did it? The other potential crisis, while linked to the first, is much more transparent. The U.S. Constitution lays out three criteria for president and vice president. Article II, Section 1, requires that the president be at least 35 years of age, have lived 14 years in the United States, and be a “natural-born” citizen.
“Natural born” citizens are distinct from citizens who are native-born (born in the country) or naturalized. While native-born or naturalized citizen may hold any other office, only “natural born” citizens are eligible for the presidency, the idea being that America’s founders wanted to ensure that the chief executive had allegiance only to the American republic.
The Constitution doesn’t define “natural born”, but according to common law at the time and, later, the 1875 U.S. Supreme Court case “Minor v. Happersett”, a “natural born” citizen is understood to be someone born in the U.S. to citizen parents (plural). “Minor” spelled out this definition and is thus the signal case. It is remarkable that in mid-2008, as Barack Obama was clinching the presidential nomination, references to the “Minor” case inexplicably disappeared from 25 related U.S. Supreme Court decisions archived at Justia.com, a leading legal search engine popular with journalists and legal bloggers. Coincidence? When attorney and blogger Leo Donofrio, whose Obama eligibility challenge went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in December 2008 (dismissed), discovered this apparent tampering in 2011, Justia called it a “programming error”. The blogosphere called it “Justiagate”. The media, of course, said nothing at all.
So where does this leave the president, the son of a white American teen mother and a black British subject from Kenya? (Kenya became independent in 1963.)
According to his own story, Baby Obama came into the world with dual American-British citizenship. At the same time, however, there is, to date, zero verifiable evidence to be found of his Hawaiian birth; meanwhile there is circumstantial evidence of alternative nativities. For example, the personal biography Obama’s former literary agent used to promote Obama described him as “born in Kenya”. This biography, written in 1991, remained on the agency website until April 2007 – two months after then-Senator Obama announced his presidential run.
Other oddities include a missing week of immigration cards tracking American arrivals into Hawaii from abroad that should be in the national archives. Obama’s birthday in August 1961 falls in this missing week. In light of unexplained facts such as these, in light of the Obama documents that remain sealed, it’s really not so hard to see where a foreign nativity story comes from – or at least why a number of Americans are confused.
Many have heard about the two 1961 newspapers that published announcements of Obama’s birth. Posse investigators discovered that foreign-born children were similarly announced as Hawaiian births in these same papers, while they also found a set of adopted twins who were several years old before their “birth” announcements appeared.
Further complicating Obama’s citizenship story is an undisputed school record from Jakarta which identifies young Obama as a citizen of Indonesia. With all of this in mind, it’s hard to stamp Obama “natural-born”. Still, no challenger to date has managed to convince an American court of this. Of course, almost every single case has been dismissed before trial.
Also worth noting is that almost every single case sought the same thing: the release of the Obama birth “long-form” birth certificate. This is the very document the White House website put on display in April 2011. Obama spent an estimated one to three million dollars to fight previous attempts to compel him to release this same document. What happened to make the president change his mind?
Two senior White House officials presided over the birth certificate’s unveiling at a pen-and-paper, off-camera, no audio-recording, press conference. One journalist in the pack pointed out, “some people are going to remain unconvinced”. He continued: “They’re going to say that this is just a photocopy of a piece of paper. You could have typed anything in there. Will the actual birth certificate be on display or viewable at any …”
The White House transcript breaks off with the word: “(laughter)”.
Who will get the last laugh? Barack Obama? Sheriff Arpaio? The politicians who keep their heads down, or the citizens who take their Constitution seriously? Whoever laughs last, it seems safe to say that the Obama birth certificate is a very funny document.

Birther Movement (Obama Birth Certificate)
Updated: Aug. 24, 2012
The so-called birther movement began during the 2008 campaign when some of Barack Obama’s critics claimed, without offering proof, that he was born in Kenya, like his father, Barack Obama Sr. The Constitution states that no one born in another country is eligible to become president.
The charge has become a potent rallying point among Tea Party supporters, was a factor in the early stages of the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination and has led to legislation being introduced in a number of states to require candidates to certify their eligibility for office. Democrats have often responded with derision, and have criticized Republican leaders for failing to speak out against a conspiracy theory the president’s supporters see as being meant to undermine the legitimacy of Mr. Obama’s election.
The elder Mr. Obama was an exchange student at the University of Hawaii when he met and married Mr. Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham. The Obama campaign ultimately responded by releasing a “certification of live birth,” an official document from the Hawaii Department of Health, and posting it online on the White House Web site.
On April 27, 2011, President Obama posted a “long form’’ birth certificate from the state of Hawaii online at the White House Web site. It shows conclusively that Mr. Obama was born in Honolulu and is signed by state officials and his mother. In Hawaii, the “long form’’ certificates are not made public, and “certifications of live birth” are issued instead. The White House said that Mr. Obama had authorized Hawaii to release the long-form document broadly.
Mr. Obama acted in the face of poll results showing that almost half of Republican voters believed he had been born in another country and that almost a quarter said they did not know where he was born. Donald Trump, the real-estate mogul, had briefly surged in polls of Republican voters after he made questions about Mr. Obama’s birth a centerpiece of his public appearances.
The issue entered the presidential race again in August 2012, when Mitt Romney, then the presumptive Republican nominee, seemed to make a joke about President Obama’s birth certificate while speaking to voters in his home state of Michigan.
“Now I love being home in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born,” Mr. Romney said, standing alongside his wife, Ann, and his running mate, Representative Paul D. Ryan. “Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital. I was born in Harper Hospital. No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.”
The Romney campaign quickly scrambled to walk back his comments, saying he was simply sharing his Michigan pride. “The governor has always said, and has repeatedly said, he believes the president was born here in the United States,” said Kevin Madden, an adviser to Mr. Romney, who served as governor of Massachusetts.
During the 2008 campaign, two fact-checking groups, FactCheck.org and PolitiFact, had concluded the certificiation of live birth was authentic. A reporter for The Honolulu Advertiser also found two separate newspaper announcements of the president’s birth, one in The Advertiser on Aug. 13, 1961, and another in The Honolulu Star-Bulletin the next day. Both carried the words “Mr. and Mrs. Barack H. Obama, 6085 Kalanianaole Highway, son, Aug. 4.”
Still, the questions persisted. The certificate number is blacked out on the Internet copy, and Mr. Obama’s detractors demanded the release of his original long-form birth certificate, which in Hawaii is not considered a public record. The state was so besieged by inquiries that the governor, Linda Lingle, a Republican, signed a law allowing officials to ignore the queries as nuisances.
“I certainly hope by the fourth year of our administration that we’ll have dealt with this burgeoning birth controversy,” the White House press secretary, Robert Gibbs, told reporters in 2009. The fact-checkers at PolitiFact sounded similarly frustrated in a 2009 post: they thought they had put the matter to rest. “Oh, how naïve we were,” the post’s writer, Robert Farley, said.
But the issue remained potent among conservative voters. In April 2011, a New York Times-CBS News poll found that a plurality of Republican voters, 47 percent, said they believed Mr. Obama was born in another country; 22 percent said they did not know where he was born, and 32 percent said they believed he was born in the United States.
Among all voters, the same poll found that 57 percent of adults surveyed nationwide said Mr. Obama was born in the United States, versus 25 percent who said he was born in another country.
The issue helped give a boost to the potential presidential bid of Mr. Trump, who spoke often of his “real doubts” about whether Mr. Obama was born in this country and sent investigators to Hawaii to research the issue. An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll showed Mr. Trump as the most favored candidate among Republicans who consider themselves Tea Party supporters.
Michelle Bachmann, another potential presidential candidate, told Fox News in mid-April that the president could clear up the matter by showing his birth certificate. In an interview with Sean Hannity, she said: “Let’s solve this and get it over with.”
One day later, Ms. Bachmann deemed herself satisfied when George Stephanopoulos of ABC News produced the certification of live birth, which is complete with a registration number, a signature from the registrar and a seal from the state of Hawaii. “Well then,” Ms. Bachmann said, “that should settle it.”
So-called birther bills have foundered or fallen dormant in at least five states and are still being debated in more than a half-dozen others. In Arizona, where both legislative chambers passed one such bill, Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, vetoed it, calling it “a bridge too far.”
Oklahoma, a deeply conservative state, could be the first to put its doubts into law, through a bill that would require all candidates, from Town Council hopeful on up, to provide certified proof that they meet the legal requirements for office.
Supporters of the measure, and others like it from Georgia to Montana, protest that they are not “birthers,” as doubters of Mr. Obama’s natal provenance have been dubbed, sometimes derisively. They say that they simply want to clarify the status of all candidates and that Mr. Obama’s case has only sharpened the issue and illuminated what they call a glaring hole in the statutes.

LAS VEGAS – On the very day that Donald Trump’s birther comments have dominated coverage of the presidential race, Mitt Romney managed to slip in a reference during a speech to the U.S. birth requirement for anyone who wants to be president.
“I was speaking with one of these business owners who owns a couple of restaurants in town,” said Romney at a campaign event here in Las Vegas, mentioning a private roundtable he held ahead of the event with local residents. “And he said you know I’d like to change the constitution.”
“I’d like to have a provision in the constitution that in addition to the age of the president and the citizenship of the president and the birthplace of the president being set by the constitution, I’d like it also to say that the president has to spend at least three years working in business before he could become President of the United States,” said Romney, recalling the businessowner’s suggestion. Then Romney seemed to agree with the suggestion.
“You see then he or she would understand that the policies they’re putting in place have to encourage small business, make it easier for business to grow,” said Romney.
Romney is on his way to a fundraiser at Trump’s hotel here in Las Vegas. Trump has spent the day standing by his assertion that there is no actual proof that President Obama was born in the United States.
Earlier this week, Romney did not outright condone Trump’s suggestion, telling reporters that he does not agree with everything his supporters say and vice versa.
